[Csnd] Thanks for a wonderful Csound conference!

I have a number of online friends in Iran, but is it really safe for US citizens to travel there?

it is safe for no one under the current circumstances; that's what i wanted to express.

Ah yes, now that I read it more carefully, I see that. It’s really too bad, there are many people there that I would love to meet in person.

Giovanni,

It is always great to see you at ICSC and to hear your wonderful music.
It would be fantastic to meet your students and your colleagues in Palermo were you able to host the next ICSC there in 2026.
I hope that you can make it happen.
And I hope that we can all gather there to share our latest work.
Take care.
Wishing you - and all the amazing Csounders - all the best.

I think it’d be amazing if Palermo would work out. Regardless, thank you Giovanni for looking into it!

I had the thought today that we did a Csound 30 mini-conference in Maynooth in 2016 (https://csound.com/csound30/). (Interesting point, I’ve seen Csound listed as both starting in 1985 and 1986. Seems 1986 was used for the 30th anniversary; the MIT Csound book mentions 1985 as the start.) It would be nice to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Csound, whether that is next year or 2026, and whether that is a full Csound conference or a mini-conference.

great idea!
let's decide that 1985 was right, and then have a 40th anniversary next year.

i am always curious about these historical dates, and i think victor went deep into exploring this. what can be fixed as "birth" of csound, as a date?

I was there - and I can tell you this - Barry may have started Csound in 1985, but I started at Berklee in the fall of 1986 - and would start 4 days a week (rising at 4a, leaving my home at 5a to drive to Boston, and meeting Barry at MIT at 6a to beta-test his new Csound - and then rusing off at 8:30a to teach my 9a classes at Berklee. (some days, classes began at 11 at Berklee and we would dig in deeper)

and is there any publishing event, like presenting the software, in 1985?

not sure - possibly. It is possible that he was making versions and he and students were using it at MIT before the fall of 1986 - when I was a regular there, but at the time - he was moving music11 to csound and we were making sure that all the music11 pieces and tests and my ‘trapped’ ran correctly and bug free in his new Csound. it could be that Music11 had been rewritten in C and called Csound before the fall of 1986.

Thanks professor Boulanger,
your appreciation touch me and add a strong motivation to our idea, we work about soon (not 2025, too early for us, better the big one meeting). It’s a very pleasure at ICSC to knew you, your followers and all your involving work.

Best regards,

Giovanni

Hey - the 1985 birthday of Csound might actually be correct!

  • wait a minute.

I started at Berklee in the fall of 1986, (and it is true that Barry and I would meet in the mornings before I would start teaching at Berklee.), but I returned from UCSD with my PhD in 1985 and while I was hunting for jobs (and was a finalist for one at MIT, YALE, and Berklee), I started meeting regularly with Barry at the MIT Media Lab (in 1985) - working with him on Csound (He got me the COMBO and a LITTLE OFFICE to work in).

There and then, I, for sure, was working with him regularly, on his new Csound (in 1985!) - and so YES…

I believe that 2025 IS the 40th anniversary of Csound.

And YES - It would be awesome to have a 40th celebration concert/weekend (at Maynooth?) in 2025.

Victor, John - could you confirm, in the code, that there are entries from 1985. I think you will find ‘many’.

I will also look back at some of my calendars to see when I started my regular daily/weekly meetings with Barry at the then, very new, MIT MEDIA LAB

great --- this email should be kept for our historians. thanks for going deeper in this.
i still believe that barry must have shown some collegues or even the public his development during this time. perhaps he can remember? or there are MIT archives about it?
cheers -
  joachim

I will do a little more digging through my archives and notes - and see what I can find about specific dates.
Maybe John and Victor will also find some clues in the earliest code that they began working with.

Hi!

I am still thinking with very vivid memories about the time spent in Vienna! It was just wonderful and so inspiring.

Does anybody have any photos taken from some of the events? I need to add something to a report and I forgot to take any myself…
Please send me some of your own choice directly to trmjhnns@gmail.com if you have the minute to scroll your albums.

Thanks!

Hi Tarmo

I’m not much of a photo-making person but I will check my phone.

Nevertheless I think it would be nice if we have some central place to put them (maybe Discord) so that we all can see them.

Or will this be problematic because of privacy issues?

Best,

Lovre

Here are some…
