[Csnd] Synthesizing electric engine

Hey hey,
I know that Rory has done an implementation of an electric engine, based on the model from Andy Farnell's book "Designing sound".

But has anyone perhaps built something based on engines like these:

He has a link in the description about sound production/sources of such engines, which I haven't been able to extract yet.
And here's another one, mostly focused on engine control and the influence of that:

If anyone has some basic work on something like this or perhaps further info on the basic waves produced by the stators, I would really appreciate it.

Rory's model is good, but so far I've only managed good sounds for smaller engines like drills, vacuum cleaners and the likes. Could be I'm underestimating the engine housing drastically.

Best wishes,

Jeanette

I never thought that instrument was particular good, but thanks Jeanette for your kinds words  For my latest engine efforts I’ve been using mincer with a short sample of an actual engine. It works very well, but does feel like cheating…

Yes, a sample does feel like cheating. I have a feeling that at least one of the videos showed a waveform or equation, the operative word being "showed".

In your research did you perhaps find a good html/tex-llike/programming resource with a little more maths?

Best wishes,

Jeanette

Rory Walsh, Mar 5 2026:

I never found anything as good as the Farnell book :frowning:
